Artist Profile: Gordon Connell - Painter

Gordon Connell paints in oils on canvas and board – often on distressed surfaces with rough edges and character formed by previous use. His work is abstract, the paintings are mainly blue and they are about the colour and texture of the paint surface. He is interested in perception and cognition, his paintings explore the way colours react together and how their interplay evokes emotions and memories.

Gordon is inspired by Mark Rothko who painted large areas of colour that shimmer in the eye. His intention is to produce a calm shock in the viewers mind – a sharp intake of breath. He aims for that precise shade of blue green that makes you shiver.

After achieving a BSc in psychology he studied art at Sir John Cass in London. He has lived and worked in Manchester most of his life and moved to Stratford in 2010. He has exhibited widely, most recently at the Encore on Waterside in Stratford as part of the Stratford Arts Festival 2014.

He has a studio in Bidford-on-Avon where visitors are welcome by arrangement.
